PeacePlayers International - South Africa (PPI - SA) is an independently registered charity (NPO No: 024-786-NPO / PBO No: 930023713) that uses basketball to help the young people of KwaZulu-Natal develop important skills to help them carve out a safe and successful path in a society burdened by the impact of HIV/AIDS, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, poverty, crime, and strong cultural divides. Youth living in Durban lack positive role models and opportunities to interact with different genders, racial or cultural groups outside their own community. Without clear goals for their future, or tangible skills to achieve them, many youth fall into a negative spiral that leads to personal, social and economic repercussions.
PPI’s methodology focuses on reaching at-risk youth early in life and is built on a three-tiered leadership pipeline, providing children with a year-round blend of integrated sports-based education, teens with an opportunity to develop leadership skills, and communities with a core constituency of skilled, confident mentors for the next generation. Using this unique program model, PPI-SA has positively impacted more than 27,000 youth - bridging divides, developing leaders and changing perceptions to the point where youth in Durban live peacefully together and have positive aspirations for the future. PPI-SA currently serves 450 children from 15 primary schools and 8 high schools across the communities of Durban Central, Lamontville, Umlazi, Waterloo and Wentworth, with 20 full and part-time staff (75% of whom are former participants in the program)
