Paul Phakathi – Practitioners

My motivation to join SaferSpaces:

Since 1997, I have chosen community work over a classroom to work with boys and girls beyond the classroom. Every year since then I work with 750 children per annum through parental/guardian concern. My role continues to be that of defining gender roles and stereotypes. I challenge societal norms on gender working with boys and girls.

The model was initially empowered through sub-grants by Engender Health South Africa (MAP), Margaret Sanger Centre South Africa of the Planned Parenthood Association of New York.

This care and support for boys and girls goes beyond the classroom. Making sure that boys in particular play an important role in the society by training and engaging them to revisit gender roles and norms.

The vision is very simple (An impact based approach) towards  "Emotionally intelligent leaders, husbands, partners, brothers, sons and fathers who engage in healthy expressions of their emotions".

I'm working in these sectors:

Community, Education, NGOs/CBOs

I'm specialising in these theme(s):

Children, Gender-based violence
