Although South Africa has a strong research infrastructure, no nationally representative study on the extent or impact of child sexual abuse currently exists. To fill this gap, the UBS Optimus Foundation commissioned a three year national prevalence and incidence study on child sexual abuse and maltreatment in South Africa. The full technical report of both the population study and the agency study will be launched on the 1st June 2016.
The screening of the award winning documentary ” Dream Catcher” organised by Lesedi la batho in partnership with the Tri Continental Film festival, the French Embassy and the European Union Delegation to South Africa will be followed by a panel discussion between various stakeholders in the field of Gender Equality and Rights.
The seminar will launch a special edition of the Institute for Security Studies journal, South African Crime Quarterly. This edition, on the prevention of violence in South Africa, was guest edited by Elizabeth Dartnall and Anik Gevers from the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) at the South African Medical Research Council.
