Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Awareness Workshop (Johannesburg)

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Awareness Workshop (Johannesburg) – Events

Mfundo Conferencing in collaboration with the National Institute Community Development and Management (NICDAM) will be hosting a Sexual & Gender Based Violence Awareness Workshop from 20 – 21 July 2017 at the Premier Hotel O.R Tambo, Johannesburg. The overall purpose of this workshop is to increase participants' knowledge and understanding of the concepts of gender, sexuality, rights and gender-based violence (GBV). The workshop will also outline the various forms of GBV and the core principles for a code of conduct, reporting mechanisms and how to develop a programmatic response.

Rationale & Background
Over the past few weeks, there has been national debate concerning the scourge of GBV in South Africa. Statistics paint a disturbing picture of the prevalence of these heinous crimes. The media has highlighted a number of cases of GBV, including cases of women and children who have been sexually abused and/ or killed, many at the hands of their intimate partners or close relatives.

  • A 22-year-old pregnant woman was kidnapped and gang raped on her way home from work in Johannesburg inner city.
  • Lerato Tambo Moloi was stoned to death after she had been sexually assaulted. The LBGTI community believe this was an incident of so-called “corrective” rape - where a woman is targeted because she is a lesbian.
  • Two young women from KZN, Popi Gumede (24) and Bongeka Phungula (28) who were living together in Zola, were murdered and may also have been raped.
  • Three-year-old Courtney Pieters was raped twice and murdered by a supposed family friend.
  • A young woman, Karabo Mokoena (22), was murdered and her body burnt by her ex-boyfriend.

The Sexual & Gender Based Violence Awareness Workshop will provide an in-depth understanding of GBV in Africa. It will also provide guidance on how to offer the appropriate support to survivors of GBV using the resources and procedures currently available. This training is aimed at building the capacity and commitment of participants to undertake programs targeted at eradicating GBV and to develop a new movement for gender equality. The workshop offers a detailed examination of the concepts of gender, GBV, sexuality, and rights. It further seeks to explore the impact of GBV on various sectors of development e.g. education, health and agricultural development.
